Jumpstart your creativity with this simple yet powerful journaling practice.
Dear Readers,
The start of a new year feels like opening a crisp new notebook—filled with possibilities and ready for your story. But how do you ensure that your pages aren’t just filled with mundane to-dos or half-hearted resolutions? Here’s an idea: let’s make creativity your new year’s MVP!
I’m Shantala D. Kanth, a graphologist and founder of Best Hand Creations, and I’m here to share a journaling exercise that’s not just fun but also transformative. So grab your favorite pen and let’s dive in!
"Creativity isn’t a talent; it’s a way of life—and it starts with a single word."
Why Start the Year with Creativity?
Creativity isn’t just for artists and writers. It’s for anyone who wants to:
Think outside the box. 📦
Solve problems with flair. 🎯
Add a little zest to their daily grind. 🍋
When you unleash your creative side, you open doors to fresh perspectives, whether you're drafting an email, planning a project, or just trying to make breakfast more exciting. (Pancake art, anyone?)
The Exercise: The Word-and-Doodle Challenge
Here’s a simple exercise to spark your creativity. It’s as easy as 1-2-3:
Pick a Word:
Start with something that resonates with you. It could be "growth," "joy," "courage," or even "spaghetti" (if food inspires you!).
Write About It:
Spend 10 minutes freewriting about the word. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling—just let your thoughts flow.
Doodle Around It:
Now, decorate your page with doodles related to the word. Flowers, arrows, stars, or something abstract—whatever feels right.
Why this works: The act of writing taps into your analytical mind, while doodling activates your creative, visual side. It’s like giving your brain a full workout while having fun!
Analogy Alert: Think of this exercise as making a smoothie for your mind. The writing is the base (nutritious and grounding), and the doodling is the garnish (colorful and exciting). Together, they create something refreshing and balanced.
My Personal Story: From "Meh" to Motivated
A few years ago, I kicked off January in the worst way possible: uninspired and stuck in a rut. So, I tried this very exercise. My word? "Clarity." As I scribbled and doodled, I realized I wasn’t stuck—I just needed to simplify my goals. That "aha!" moment led me to streamline my plans and start Best Hand Creations. Now, I’m sharing this tool with you.
Why This Exercise Rocks:
It’s Low Pressure: No need for perfection. Just grab a pen and start.
It’s Insightful: Writing helps you articulate your thoughts; doodling reveals your emotions.
It’s Quick: You can do it in under 15 minutes.
It’s Portable: All you need is paper and pen—no fancy apps required.
"Every masterpiece begins with a single stroke of the pen."
Tips to Make It Even Better:
Set the Mood: Light a candle, play your favorite instrumental music, or grab a cozy blanket.
Go Colorful: Use markers, crayons, or colored pens to make your page pop.
Mix It Up: Try different themes each week—like gratitude, adventure, or connection.
Share It: If you’re comfortable, share your creations with friends or post them online. Creativity is contagious!
Closing Thoughts
Starting the year creatively doesn’t mean you have to paint a masterpiece or write a novel. Sometimes, it’s as simple as playing with words and lines on a piece of paper. This little exercise might just spark big changes—or at the very least, brighten your day.
So what’s your word for the year? Go ahead, pick one, and let the magic begin!
